The hypothalamus is a small region of the brain that plays a vital role. Besides controlling the hormonal production, the hypothalamus is responsible for detecting any body change and signals the responsible gland for production of that hormone to respond to the changes. When the body temperature is high or hot, the hypothalamus signals the sweat glands to produce more of sweat to cool it. On the other hand, when the body temperature is too low, the hypothalamus signals the body muscles shiver and generate warmth by a process of maintaining homeostasis. Similarly, the thermoreceptors are sense receptors found throughout the skin and are responsible for detecting heat and cold. Their location and number determines the rate at which the skin detects temperature.
