When the food is chewed and masticated in the mouth, it is rolled into a bolus that is then able to move down the esophagus. The esophagus also accommodates semi-solid and liquid products taken in through the mouth. These products move down through peristalsis. Thus, the esophagus serves as the intake route for all solid and liquid particles that constitute food and nutrition.
