Each of your parents has two copies of each of their genes, and each parent passes along just one copy to make up the genes you have. This happens because we are primarily diploid and when gametes meet which contains haploid sets of chromosomes they form a diploid zygote which eventually grow as an individual. Thus our 2 sets of chromosomes suggest that each set is derived from different parent i.e mother and father.
