Developed by Charles Darwin and other naturalists, Darwinism is a theory of biological evolution stating that all species of organisms develop through the natural selection of minute genetic variations, increasing the ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. The theory gained prominence after Darwin publicized On the Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin defined four tenets of evolution by natural selection. The first one is that more individuals are produced in each generation that can survive. The second one is heritable phenotypic variation among individuals. Individuals better suited to the environment will survive. New species will form when reproductive isolation takes place. The theory has developed significantly over the years as new naturalists build on Darwin’s principles.
