In biological studies, taxonomy is important as it helps identify and classify different organisms into a hierarchical system.

The cytological approach concentrates on the identification and classification of organisms at a cellular level. The two main cytology approaches are the study and differentiation of chromosome and the genome of the organism. Organisms with similar genetic material and has similar chromosome morphology are identified and classified under the same ancestry origin. Consequently, if the chromosome and the cell genome differ, the organisms cannot be grouped together.
