First conceptualized by Charles Darwin, natural selection is a process through which genes adjust to the environment's situations to survive. The concept is sometimes referred to as the survival of the fittest, indicating that organisms better suited to the environment are more likely to survive. Natural selection can be seen in nature. For example, in a habitat with green and red bugs, birds prefer the taste of red bugs. With time, the green bugs reproduce more, leaving no red bugs in the end. An ecosystem may have giraffes with long and short necks. If an activity eradicating low-lying shrubs occurred, short-necked giraffes would be starved. In a few generations, all the giraffes would have long necks.
