Answer to Question #189201 in Ecology for farah yahya

Question #189201

) Calculate the species richness, evenness and the diversity (use Shannon index) in each area (Community ecology). Compare and contrast both areas.

Expert's answer

Divide Shannon's diversity index H by natural logarithm of species richness ln(S) to calculate the species evenness. In the example, 0.707 divided by 1.099 equals 0.64. Note that species evenness ranges from zero to one, with zero signifying no evenness and one, a complete evenness.

To calculate, first count the number of garments you have of each species. Add these counts and calculate a proportion for each species (p=number of counts/sum of total counts). Take the natural logarithm of each proportion (lnp) and then multiply the proportion and the ln of the proportion (p*lnp)
