The cell membrane  is a thin semi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell. Its function is to protect the integrity of the interior of the cell by allowing certain substances into the cell while keeping other substances out.Phospholipids make up the basic structure of a cell membrane. A single phospholipid molecules has two different ends: a head and a tail. The phospholipids of a cell membrane are arranged in a double layer called the lipid bilayer. The hydrophilic phosphate heads are always arranged so that they are near water.

  • protects the cell by acting as a barrier.
  • regulates the transport of substances in and out of the cell.
  • receives chemical messengers from other cell.
  • acts as a receptor.
  • cell mobility, secretions, and absorptions of substances.
