Meiosis is a process where a single cell divides twice to produce four cells containing half the original amount of genetic information.

One cell divides 2 times to form 4 cells. Daughter cells have identical chromosomes as the parent cell. These four daughter cells only have half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell – they are haploid. (g) The chromosome gets a different arrangement.

Meiosis is important for three main reasons: it allows sexual reproduction of diploid organisms, it enables genetic diversity, and it aids the repair of genetic defects.
