In addition to specialized cells, progenitor cells are present in many tissues.  As a rule, some of them retain the ability to divide.  Poorly differentiated cells that are capable of proliferation and are a source of tissue regeneration are called cambial cells.

 According to the method of placement of cambium cells are divided into three types:

 1. Localized - cambial cells are located in a certain locus of tissue (for example, in the epidermis cambial cells are in the basal layer).

 2. Diffuse - cambial cells are located throughout the tissue (connective tissue).

 3. Removed - cambial tissue cells are contained outside it (cartilaginous tissues).

 There are also non-cambial tissues - they contain only differentiated cells.  They can be divided into two types:

 1. In some non-cambial tissues, differentiated cells retain the ability to divide, which is manifested by stimulating effects (liver epithelium, renal epithelium).

 2. In other non-cambial tissues, cells have finally lost the ability to divide.  These are nerve and heart muscle tissue.  In them regeneration is impossible.
