Fat is a lipid that is stored in the adipose tissues of the body. It has a role in a range of biological processes, including protecting organs from stress, controlling body temperature, and facilitating cell function.

There are several different forms of fats:

  • Saturated fats
  • Unsaturated fats
  • Trans fats

In the body, unsaturated fats lower bad cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels, whereas saturated fats raise the bad cholesterol, triglycerides, and total cholesterol levels.

Triglyceride or triacylglyceride is a lipid that stores energy in the form of fat and it also provides energy to the body. Over-production or accumulation of triglycerides results in obesity or weight gain.

Diglyceride acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of diacylglycerol and acyl-CoA into triglycerides. Triglyceride synthesis can be reduced by inhibiting the DGAT1 enzyme. Treatment using DGAT1 inhibitor (AZD7687) helps in fat loss or weight loss.

Adverse effects of DGAT1 inhibitor:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain

Also, no potential complication is associated with this treatment.
