Question #240155
  1. a) In the quantitative determination of moisture, why is 5-6 gram ample used instead of 1 gram.

b) Describe two different sources of an experimental error (as opposed to human error) that might enter into the determination of moisture as carried out in this experiment, that is, explain why the% moisture on the same kind of substance may vary.

c) Recall that the average molecular weight cut off of the dialysis tubing is 14,000 amu. Are protein larger or smaller than 14,000 amu? How about sugars? Explain.

d) Explain why agitation of the solution surrounding the dialysis sack is important to achieve the amount of dialysis.

Moisture content (MC) is reported on either a wet or a dry basis. For the wet basis, the amount of water is divided by the total weight of the sample (solids plus moisture). For the dry basis, the amount of water is divided by the dry weight (solids only).

systematic errors, random errors, and blunders. Systematic errors are due to identified causes and can, in principle, be eliminated. Errors of this type result in measured values that are consistently too high or consistently too low.
