5 Gender and Development Analysis Tools

There are a number of gender and development analysis tools. Gender issues have increasingly been regarded as development issues by organizations such as USAID. That is because higher gender equity in a society denotes higher levels of economic development. The five main analytical tools are briefly discussed below.

The first is access to assets and resources. This tool measures how much of the family assets women control comparative to men. In many societies women have little access to resources, thus affecting their effectiveness in implementing development activities. 

The second tool is women in leadership positions. This compares how many leadership positions are available to women compared to men. This affects the women’s ability to make decisions on matters that directly affect them. 

The third is availability of water. In many societies women will spend their time looking for water for family use, thus affecting their own economic development. 

The fourth is the availability of health services. Women have gender specific health needs that don’t affect men. Such services as family planning directly target women. Moreover, the health care of children is a role mainly left to women in many jurisdictions. 

The fifth is paid and unpaid labor. Women tend to carry out more activities without pay, while men are paid for the same roles. This results in inequalities that affect women, and development of the society in general. 

These tools can be used to effectively assess the development level of a society. Usually, societies in which there is higher gender equity exhibit higher levels of development.
