Jump Ball: a Basketball Season in Poems is a wonderful novel in verses by Mel Glenn that inspires youngsters to take the most of the life. Through two different plot lines Glenn convinces readers that Jump Ball is not simply a novel about basketball, but a story of personal victories and losses. From the very beginning, readers find out that bus with the basketball team “Tiger” overturns because of the icy road. However, the climax of the story is in the end of the story, where the two plots collide and surprise readers with an unexpected accident. Here the author describes many injuries and deaths of the basketball players. The end is extremely tragic, as after reading about the characters, their personal problems and worries, readers are overwhelmed with sadness. Many of the characters who struggled with daily troubles and problems die in an accident, which is a true irony of the novel.
