Social structure is the way a society is organized into expected relationships while history is the study of past events, particularly in human affairs. It is important for sociologists to consider both history and the different levels of social structure in trying to understand the lives of individual since history and social structure depend on each other and can influence one another.

For instance, if a sociologist has to study social structure like family and marriage as social institutions he has to study their historical developments. In the same way, sociology provides social background of the study of history.
