Social classes arise as a result of functional reasons that benefit other superior classes. For example, poverty has been seen as a functional component to create social classes. People living in poverty are ignorant of their rights and tend to submit to cheap offers from superior classes that further creates social class differences.

Burawoy has also described the sociological structure of the public that has resulted in racial identities accompanied by downward assimilations from other races. The adoption of pessimist perception towards other races by developing generation is described by Burawoy as a second-generation decline that would impact people who reject immigrant jobs and opportunities.

Burawoy describes public sociology as an accomplishment to civil society, highlighting the significance of neutrality that does not exist among cosmopolitan areas. Decolonization occurred geographically by the withdrawal of whites from the African nations, but colonialism continued to exist among the African American societies. Burawoy’s public sociology outlines the fairness and neutrality seen to result in civil societies that fight for the rights of African Americans that still face the consequences of modern colonialism. Civil societies create rooms for dialogues to address the social problem that exists among former colonialist and the races perceived to be their subjects
