Suicide is when a teen causes his or her death on purpose. Before trying to take their own life, a teen may have thoughts of wanting to die, which is referred to as suicide ideation. Suicidal behavior is when a teen is focused on doing things that cause her death. Most people who seriously consider suicide do not want to die. Rather, they see suicide as a solution to a problem and a way to end their pain. People who seriously consider suicide feel hopeless, helpless, and worthless. A person who feels hopeless believes that no one can help with a particular event or problem. A person who feels helpless is immobilized and unable to take steps to solve problems. A person who feels worthless is overwhelmed with a sense of personal failure.

Most adolescents who speak about or threaten to die by suicide will not take this extreme step as they want to attract attention. Suicide comes as a result of depression and a way of overcoming depression is by expression. Opening up is the most important step to be taken to overcome depression. So, when a teenager talks about suicide, it's a step taken towards a confession. This is a point that they will share their issues and find the needed attention. Attempting suicide is always thought of as a solution to trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to get relief from really bad thoughts or feelings. The victims didn't want to die as much as they wanted to escape from what was going on. And at that particular moment dying seemed like the only way out. But the moment they get someone to open up to and to share with after putting forth a threat and they get attention, they find better solutions than killing themselves.

Unlike the majority of adolescents who die by suicide, they have a long history of disturbed behavior and have not been in a position to share with anybody for help. So they lack that confidence and solution to their problems. There are some of the reasons for taking one's life away.

Some people who end their lives might be trying to escape feelings of rejection, hurt, or loss. Others might feel angry, ashamed, or guilty about something. Some people may be worried about disappointing friends or family members. And some may feel unwanted, unloved, victimized, or like they're a burden to others. In these situations, they have not a person to share with the situation and the depression keeps eating them up to the point they opt to kill themselves without sharing.

What makes a person unable to see another way out of a bad situation besides ending his or her life is depression. Depression is when your general moods change and you lose interest in normal ways of life.

Depression leads people to focus mostly on failures and disappointments, to emphasize the negative side of their situations, and to downplay their capabilities or worth. Someone with severe depression can't see the possibility of a good outcome and may believe they will never be happy or things will never go right for them again.

Depression affects a person's thoughts in such a way that the person doesn't see when a problem can be overcome. It's as if depression puts a filter on the person's thinking that distorts things. That's why depressed people don't realize that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem in the same way that other people do. A teen with depression may feel like there's no other way out of problems, no other escape from emotional pain, or no other way to communicate a desperate unhappiness.

Sometimes people who feel suicidal may not even realize they are depressed. They're unaware that it is the depression — not the situation — that's influencing them to see things in a "there's no way out," "it will never get better," "there's nothing I can do" kind of way.

And so they commit suicide.
