The Philippine national flag is made of silk and features a white equilateral triangle on the left with a sunburst of eight rays in the center, a five-pointed star at each angle of the triangle, an upper stripe of blue, and a lower stripe of red, according to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. The sun represents liberty; the eight rays represent the first eight provinces to take up arms against Spain; and the three stars represent the Philippines' three island groups - Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The upper blue stripe represents peace, truth, and justice, while the lower red stripe represents patriotism and valor, and the white triangle represents Filipino yearning for equality. Pithecophaga jefferyi is the scientific name for the Philippine national bird, the "Philippine eagle." Former President Ferdinand Marcos issued Proclamation No. 1732 in 1978, making it official.
