Mandela's focus was on racial reconciliation and unity in a country torn apart by racism. He did not, however, address some of the country's key issues, like as the country's widespread racial and economic inequality, which keeps the vast majority of black South Africans in poverty.

Land distribution is also a problem that hasn't been solved. The majority of the land is still in white hands, and how to compensate farmers remains a contentious subject. More than half of the country remains impoverished, and a small elite controls the majority of the country's wealth.

With youth unemployment in South Africa exceeding 50%, many young people are skeptical of Mandela's legacy.

Cyril Ramaphosa, who was a close confidant of Mandela's, has replaced Zuma. Under Mandela, Ramaphosa played a key role in drafting South Africa's new and liberal constitution.

PRESERVING A DIVIDED PARTY'S UNITY

Different ideological currents have historically crossed the ANC since its founding in 1912. Its stance shifts between non-racialism and African nationalism, or between promoting the middle class through liberal economic reforms and pro-poor and pro-worker social programs.

FIGHTING CORRUPTION AND MISMANAGEMENT

After the Jacob Zuma era, which was defined by numerous scandals, the battle against corruption and mismanagement of public resources became a top focus. Cyril Ramaphosa announced changes in the management of the biggest public firms recognized for their dysfunctions shortly after his election. This was especially true of Eskom, South Africa's public electrical utility, and South African Airways.

EMBODIMENTING ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CHANGE

Cyril Ramaphosa has begun a fundamental reform that was sparked by an ANC declaration at the most recent national conference: land redistribution without compensation. Since 1994, the ANC has not undertaken any significant measures to challenge the colonial privilege to land ownership.

Ramaphosa has been called a skillful negotiator and strategist who acted as the ANC's Chief Negotiator during South Africa's transition to democracy. Ramaphosa built up the biggest and most powerful trade union in the country, the National Union of Mineworkers
