Chaudhary Muhammad Ali and his staff worked tirelessly to draft a constitution after taking office as Prime Minister. On January 9, 1956, the committee tasked with framing the Constitution delivered the draft Bill to Pakistan's Constituent Assembly. Bengali autonomists were opposed to the bill. On February 29, when the Assembly ratified the Constitution, Bhashai, the head of the Awami League in East Pakistan, utilized the prospect of secession to argue for autonomy, and his party staged a walkout from the Assembly. Later, the Awami League boycotted the ceremonial festivities commemorating the Constitution's commencement. Despite their protests, the Constitution was passed and put into effect on March 23, 1956. Pakistan's status as a dominion came to an end with this declaration, and the country was renamed the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The Constituent Assembly was replaced by the interim National Assembly, and Governor-General Iskander Mirza was sworn in as Pakistan's first President. The 1956 Constitution included 234 articles grouped into 13 divisions and six schedules. This Constitution refers to Pakistan as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which is the country's official name. When we examine the terms of the constitution, we can see that the Government of India Act of 1935 and the 1st Interim Constitution of 1947 had an impact on it.

The first notable characteristic of the 1956 Constitution is that it establishes a parliamentary government. The president has executive responsibility under the parliamentary system of government, but he utilizes it on the advice of the Prime Minister, except in subjects that are left to the president's discretion. The National Assembly, which is the second most important aspect of this constitution, was founded as a single-house parliament. It had only one chamber, but in traditional federal government, there are two houses, one for representing the constituent entities of the federation and the other for representing the people. The federal framework was the third aspect of the 1956 Constitution. This constitution established Pakistan's federation, which at the time consisted of two provinces, East and West Pakistan, as well as additional areas under the direct administration of the federal government. The constitution's next feature was the institution of an independent judiciary. When you have a written constitution, like the 1956 constitution had, and a federal system of government, you need an independent judiciary. The judicial system began with the Supreme Court at the top, followed by a high court in each province, and then lower courts under the high courts, albeit the term superior is only used for the Supreme Court and provincial high courts.
