Critical thinking is the examination of facts geared towards forming a judgment. Critical thinking is multifaceted, and numerous diverse definitions exist, which usually comprise the skeptical, rational, unbiased investigation, or evaluation of actual evidence. It is in this background, therefore, this essay focus on critical thinking according to Heidegger.

According to Heidegger, there are two forms of thinking namely meditative and calculative. On one hand, meditative thinking comprises something much deeper than practical calculation. The form takes much more effort. It should be noted that meditative thinking informs us why we should do or not do something, which is beyond the simple process of calculative in doing it. On the other hand, calculative thinking is technical human thinking, where people collect data and harmonize for specific usage. It should be noted that calculative thinking is frequently used by all humanity since it is vital for more motivations of life and practical activities. The process of calculative thinking is central to doing something without considering the outcomes.  Both meditative and calculative thinking forms the basis for critical thinking.

Finally, Heidegger holds that critical thinking ought to be open to being’s self-transformation if and when it occurs. Therefore, we are urged by Heidegger that we still have to learn to think.
