1) 4x=12
Dividing both parts of the equation by 4 we obtain
x=12/4=3

2) 3x+16=37
First let's transfer 16 to the right part of the equation so we have only terms containing x in the left part. Keep in mind that when transferring terms from one part to another we should change the sign in front of them:
3x=37-16
3x=21
Dividing both parts by 3 we get
x=21/3=7
