"\\lambda" is an Eigenvalue of matrrix T iff "(T-\\lambda I)X=0" for some non-zero X.

"\\iff X\\in ker\\{T-\\lambda I \\} \\iff T-\\lambda I" is not injective.

Thus statement a and b are equivalent.
