A simple communication model comprises of five components: the sender and receiver, the medium that carries the message, contextual factors, the message itself, and feedback.

The sender is the person who sends the message to receiver who receives the message and in turn sends it to the sender who is now the receiver. Senders and receivers may have different reactions to the same information. There are various obstacles to communication that hinders a sender's message from being understood as intended. Examples include bad grammar and word choice, and the nature of the relationship between the sender and receiver.

Medium that carries the message is the channel used to pass the message from sender to receiver. A message can be passed to receiver via speech in a face-to-face conversation, an e-mail, an instant message, a telephone call, or a written letter.

Contextual factors which are the factors that surround the message being send. These factors include timing, environment and body language.

Another component of communication is message which is defined as the object of communication or the thing that is being communicated. A message may be spoken, written, visual, and physical signals.

Lastly we have the feedback. This is the response to a communicated message. A feedback can be negative or positive. A positive feedback indicates that the receiver has received and understood the message while a negative feedback indicates that the receiver either has not received the message or he/she has received the message but has not understood its content.
