Question 1

A company with a solid organizational structure reaps from improved communication, a well-defined hierarchy, and the capability to create a unified company message. As efficient as an organizational structure can be, it can also create problems that can reduce or lose productivity and internal conflict. For an organization to maintain a robust company framework, issues should be identified within an organizational structure and be dealt with as they occur.

1.1 Changes Brought in by New Management

If there have not been advances in management for many years, then the company will start to settle into doing things that are efficient and comfortable for the existing management team. For whatever reason, management changes can strain an organization's organizational structure (Kodama, 2016). The new manager may be unfamiliar with how the organizational structure has been run for years and try to put a new turn on how things should run. There is an adjustment phase for employees and other managers.

1.2 Conflict Caused by Departmental Loyalty

One of the risks of creating departments is the appearance of an "us versus them" mentality between different groups. Sales may get in conflict with accounting because new customers are not getting approved for credit terms. Logistics is at odds with manufacturing since products are not being built fast enough to meet shipping deadlines. Departments can get competitive and feel that their work is more critical to the company's success than the work of the other groups. Such an occurrence can cause breaks in communication that affect productivity.

1.3 Communication About Company Goals

According to management consultants Liebowitz and Associates, an organizational structure can only be effective when the entire company uses it properly. When upper management stipulates departmental goals for the rest of the company without consulting first with the managers of the other departments, the company runs the risk of not achieving its objectives (Katz, 2019). For an organizational structure to be efficient, goal-making needs to be a two-way process. When upper management does not seek the company's input to create company goals, resentment can set in, and morale begins to drop.

1.4 Conflict and Finger Pointing

A breakdown in communication in the organization at any point can result in conflict. Suppose the shipping department does not get notification of a necessary shipment in time to make next-day delivery. In that case, that can cause a dispute among several departments in the organization. Finger-pointing and arguing accompany a breakdown in inter-departmental communication. When departments engage in war, the productivity of the entire organization is affected.

Question 2

2.1 Effective Communication Keeps the Business Running

Effective communication is critical to keep an organizational structure running smoothly. Without contact, new ideas and processes can get confused within the organization. Managers may begin to redouble efforts to claim specific parts of a process as their own (Goffin, 2016). Therefore, such developments are why executive communication to the rest of the company is significant to the success of an organizational structure. If departments are not apparent precisely what each party's responsibilities are, the ensuing confusion can slow down production.
