John Baumann started bakers in 1885 when he bought the biscuits company. In 1994 the major biscuit brands of Pyotts, Baumans, Willards, and Bakers were merged to form "Associated Biscuits", which is part of the AVI Group and now known as "Snackworks". The AVI Group has 14 businesses, including Green Cross and I & J, other household names in South Africa. Bakers has had to stay ahead of technology and changes in the biscuit market.
