Instagram was first meant to offer a free media sharing service on a website where users could follow each other by posting photos. Instagram became the world's #1 social photo app registering over 800 million users since its launch in 2010. Society was not as visually focused as in the current during the infancy of Instagram. Users could only post single photos with descriptions cut to add website links to the same photo' status update.

In the same year, Instagram launched an app for iOS on October 6, 2010, registering one million users who downloaded the app following the iPhone 4.
