McGregor’s theory of x and y has active applicability in the contemporary work setting. The main change in work settings today is the growing number of experts. Most organizations tend to favor talent, expertise, and creativity as the main tool for getting the best products and services especially with relevance to development. They need time and less supervision, also, more importantly, they are self-motivated to work. This group of employees is best motivated using theory x, that is, participative approach of management to feel appreciated and motivated. Also, there is a never-ending need for casual or semi-skilled labor, and each organization has a section of staff that belong to this category, they are mainly productivity is based on numbers, that could be sales or production. Because of the repetitive nature of their work, they are bound not to like their work. As a result, they need to be pressured to keep their productivity height. As a result, they need a theory x, authoritarian approach of management, which means more supervision, threats, and punishments. Theory x is also most suitable for startup companies, most of which the employees need guidance and supervision to keep within the product lines.
