Reinforcement can be used to shape behavior. A reinforcer is a monetary reward that improves the likelihood that a behavior will be repeated. In mathematics, the phrases positive and negative are employed. A positive value indicates that something has been added, while a negative value suggests that something has been eliminated or removed. As a result, positive reinforcement occurs when a behavior is rewarded. If an employee appreciates extra pay and the target behavior is cleaning the office, the additionsl pay serves as a positive reinforcer (reward) because it is given or added when the behavior occurs. This increases the likelihood of the activity occurring again. Negative reinforcement is defined as the removal of a stimulus as a result of activity that has a good effect for the individual. For example, a fine may be waived and a person may avoid going to jail. The absence of the negative stimulus (the fine) results in a favorable consequence for the individual, namely, no jail time.
