a) The Reinforcement Theory is based on the assumption that individual behavior is a function of the consequences of that behavior. It is simple and intuitive. For businesses, the reinforcement theory of motivation serves as an approach of achieving the desired level of motivation among employees by using behavior reinforcement, punishment and extinction.

b) Determining positive and negative behavior is the first step in reinforcement. Good behavior can be rewarded and reinforced through positive consequences such as appraising the employee. Positive behavior can also be reinforced through removal of negative consequences where the manager can stop nagging employees. Negative behavior can be met with negative consequences such as removal. They can also be addressed by the removal of positive consequences and management ignores the behavior.
