Discuss in detail the role of the labor unions in collective bargaining with reference to the preparation phases of negotiation;

The role of trade unions in collective bargaining is to negotiate wages, workplace safety, policies, and work rules, promotion of workers, firing, and complaint procedures. The preparation phases of negotiation require taking plenty of time to know what employees want; the trade union should know precisely what they want, do not set low target or too high, and should do adequate preparation of their argument. Trade union should know their alternative to reaching an agreement, this will help them know when to walkway and pursue their best alternative. Calculate the reservation value, the trade union should calculate their value, this will help them avoid accepting an offer lower than their best alternative to a negotiated agreement (BATNA) or rejecting an offer higher than their BATNA. Assess the counterpart BATNA, trade union should know what their counterpart (employer) is willing to offer so that you can reach a mutual agreement.
