Nationalism was devoted to the interests of the country; Americans were asked to be loyal and protect the sovereignty of their nation. Such expression was exhibited through protect tariffs, a national bank and improvement of a transport system. On the other hand, sectionalism asked Americans to be concerned about their regions rather than the nation. This was exhibited through issues such as the rivalry among the North, West and South.
