Why did Eisenhower use brinkmanship with China to protect Taiwan?

In 1954, China intended on attacking two of its islands. Eisenhower envisioned Taiwan as an Anti-Communist barrier in Asia that needed protection at all costs. Therefore, through brinkmanship, Eisenhower threatened that nuclear weapons would be used by the US naval forces for China to back down in the course of attack to Taiwan.
