The gilded age was a period in US history, from 1870s to the end of the century that was characterized by vigorous economic growth and industrialization, growing demand of skilled labor, and wages growth. The development of trade unions in different industrial sectors and their policies were aimed at introducing progressive changes into labor-management relations. Railroads became a powerful mechanism for enhancing and supporting economic and industrial growth. New waves of immigration, with poorer immigrants coming to the USA, increased the economic and labor market potentials and also demanded more democratic attitudes toward “new Americans”. All these events and groups of people involved in them prepared the basis for Progressivism.
Politics were also apowerful factor that had a strong impact on social life. T. Roosevelt’s policies related to Progressivism and hissocial reforms were assisted and prepared by the processes that took place during the gilded age that enhanced industrialization and rapid economic growth.
