The history of France from 1789 to 1914 (the long 19th century) extends from the French Revolution to World War I and includes:

  • French Revolution (1789–1792)
  • French First Republic (1792–1804)
  • First French Empire (1804–1814/1815)
  • Bourbon Restoration (1814/1815–1830)
  • July Monarchy (1830–1848)
  • Second Republic (1848–1852)
  • Second Empire (1852–1870)
  • Third Republic (1870-1940)

The French revolution occurred for various reasons, including poor economic policies, poor leadership, an exploitative political- and social structures. The political causes of the French revolution included the autocratic monarchy, bankruptcy and extravagant spending of royals.

One of the most significant phenomena surrounding the French Revolution of 1789 and its legacy, is that the world was able to witness how people were able to organize themselves to fight for National interest and take down century old ways of life. This ultimately led to the legacy and the birth of the idea of the possibility of differing political ideologies.
