The colonization venture, which had numerous American Colonization Society subdivisions in every state, had three objectives. One was to offer a secure residence for former slaves, freedmen, and their offspring to live, where they would be unrestricted and not cause to undergo racial discrimination.

In a timely struggle to end slavery, the American Colonization Society, established in 1816, suggested the notion of releasing slaves and directing them back to Africa. This resolution was assumed to be a compromise between slavery enthusiasts and antislavery campaigners. By 1860, approximately 12,000 African Americans had returned to Africa. The American Colonization Society fought slavery by concentrating on buying and liberating slaves, compensating for their passageway to the west coast of Africa, and supporting them after their influx.
