In 1972, US President Richard Nixon and Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks treaty intended to limit the arms race in strategic ballistic missiles armed with nuclear weapons. Though both were frontline Cold War warriors, they were eager to tie a closer diplomatic relationship for individual reasons. The Soviet Union at the time was involved in a hostile verbal war with its neighbor China owing to border disputes. the US was in need of support in extricating itself from the Vietnam War. Nixon's administration had failed to end the conflict despite his political promise to curb the war and needed a distraction in the wake of unpopular protests following this government's failure. The treaty was the first between the two countries and became foundation for subsequent arm limitation talks.
