 Why did the colonies prefer African slaves? What events solidified "race" as a concept in the colonies?

African slaves provided a cheap labor force and they were resistant to diseases and also the were very strong. Rise in capitalism in terms of industrial development made colonial elite realized the problems of indentured servitude. Landowners turned slaves from Africa as a more profitable and ever-renewable source of labor.
