Why would Carmichael leave the non-violent movement?
Stokely Carmichael was a charismatic and controversial young civil activist who predominantly popularized the "black power" phrase. In his civil activism roles, Carmichael became a dominant figure within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and would be regularly beated and arrested for intense demands for social change. In time, he grew disillusioned on using non-violent movement, civil rights legislation, and interracial alliances to pursue social change. He believed non-violent approach was just a tactic, not an objective, and should be dropped if worthy outcome was to be realized. It is through such arguments that he left non-violent course and decamped to Black Panther Party.
