William of Normandy or William the Conqueror was a descendant of Rollo and a Norman. He became the Duke of Normandy in 1035. His marriage to Matilda of Flanders gave him a powerful ally in the neighbouring country of Flanders, this enabled him to extend his rule in Maine by 1062. He became a contender for the throne of England in the early 1060s. In 1066, he invaded England and defeated Harold in the battle of Hastings. He was crowned King of England on 25, December 1066. He became the first Norman Monarch of England and his reign ended in 1087 when he died.
