After the Hawaii sugar planters overthrew the Monarchy they had a belief that only Annexation by the USA could have saved them from the sugar tariffs that had devastated and had prompted them into mass action against the Monarchy. The Annexation of Hawaii that was consequently prompted by the Spanish American war in Hawaii in 1898 at the urging of President William McKinley was therefore necessary since it proved a new democratic dawn for the Hawaii people as they were admitted as the 50th State of America.
