The New Jersey colony government grew and changed over time. It began with proprietors of the colony appointing governors, then later on the queen appointed royal governors. However, it was difficult for the royal governors to serve both the interests of the kings and queens of England, and that of the local citizens. As such, changes were made to strengthen the position of governorship, including adding responsibilities and powers of the governor to serve the local citizens better.
