When Portugal started to put up trading posts on its way to Asia, Native Africans experienced various challenges. For instance, some native Africans were forced into slavery because the Portuguese wanted human resources on their plantations. Also, the Portuguese encouraged rivalry between different native kingdoms since they sold guns to African kings in exchange for slaves and to maintain the slaves' supply.
