European feudalism was based on Germanic law, while Japanese feudalism was based on Chinese Confucian law. There twere generally many different types of peasants in the Japanese Middle Ages, whereas there were three sub-classes of different peasants in Medieval Europe. Those three sub-classes were freemen, serfs, and cottars
