Why do you think Buddhism would have appealed to people who were poor and had no social standing?

The Buddhist tradition encouraged charity to the monastic community in particular to accumulate spiritual merit for future lives. Buddhism also advocated for compassionate giving to the poor and the sick as a virtue in its own right.
