Before the Khmer Rouge took over, the protagonists of Loung Ung’s "First They Killed My Father," did not encounter any forms of physical and psychological trauma. In particular, Loung Ung with her family lived happily for five years of her life in Phom Pen. Ing enjoyed disobeying her parents, eating fried crickets, and even watching chickens fight.
