Before the Khmer Rouge took over, the protagonists of Loung Ung’s "First They Killed My Father," did not encounter any forms of physical and psychological trauma. In particular, Loung Ung with her family lived happily for five years of her life in Phom Pen. Ing enjoyed disobeying her parents, eating fried crickets, and even watching chickens fight. She has been in shell shock due to war, that is why she developed PTSD before the age of fifteen and when she turned fifteen her trauma from the war surfaced. All in all, everything changed physically and mentally when she started going through puberty, because of PTSD.
