The four language skills include listening, reading, speaking and writing. Listening and reading are considered to be receptive skills while speaking and writing are considered to be productive skills. Integration of these skills entails a combination of some of the skills or all of them in one single activity. Integration of the skills helps the students to transfer skills and also creates a more engaging and motivating experience for students. Integration also helps the students learn to operate confidently within the language hence easily transferring knowledge acquired in one area for active use in another.

There are some steps that should be taken while integrating the language skills. These include;

  • Learn more about the various ways to integrate the language skills in the classroom.
  • Reflect on there current approach and evaluate on the skills to be integrated.
  • Choose instructional materials, textbooks and technology that promote integration of reading, listening, writing and speaking skills.

There are various ways to ensure that the language skills are taught in an integrated way. This can be achieved through various class activities and media. For example, in the case of oral medium, I would put students in groups and nominate a student to think of a sentence. The student would then whisper the sentence to the other student next to him who will then listen and repeat the sentence to the next person until they reach the last student. The last person will shout what he had which I will write on the board. I will then ask the first person what the original sentence what and also write it on the board. The students will then read and compare them.
