Gender revolution began before the 1960s in th U.S. as seen in the story's setting.Feminisim

began to be witnessed ,sexual revolution as well as advocating for equal rights of men and women.The character Beneath reveals a girl with aspirations and determined to beat the odds of gender roles as she goes ahead to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor a profession that was regarded as male domimated.Walter Lee the main male character uses gender to restrict the aspirations of Beneath.

Gender discrimination in the book leads to spite,hatred,anger and revenge amongst the characters.The female characters throughout the story are desirous of change.They want better lives and strive to achieve this throughout the story.
