The different set of beliefs of Makhulu Mamkwayi and her mother is central to the main conflict in the novel Man Lands in the Moon. Write a paragraph in which you discuss the conflict and how it is resolved.
In the short story “Man Lands on The Moon” by Sindiwe Magona, the main character, Makhulu Mamkwayi, holds a different set of beliefs from her mother, sparking the main conflict in the book. Makhulu believed villages existed below the waters as she had witnessed some of the marvels of the underworld. Her beliefs were rooted in culture and she did not believe the white man’s narrative. She saw and talked with her dead cousin, Yolisa, by the river and believed she could save her from the spiritual ritual which would turn her into a zombie. She considered the news about a man walking on the moon a lie. On the other hand, her mother believed the white man’s chronicles and became a convert. She did not believe her daughter when she talked about the Yolisa encounter as her niece was dead to her. In the end, Makhulu bears regret over not being able to save Yolisa from turning into a zombie and outrageously blames it on her mother in later years.
