Jake couldn't wait to get to school. Today was the day of the class school Valentine's Day Party. Jake was eager to get to school because it was the first time one of his invention, a random date pairing app was going to be put to test.
Since early childhood, Jake have been an obsessive builder and problem solver. When he was 7, he spent one month drilling a hole in my front-yard, ravaging the grass lawn, determined to make a giant remote controlled guppy pond after watching the Guppy movie. After watching Castaway when he was 8, he started a fire in their backyard and to his parent’s horror using bark and kindling like Tom Hanks did. Jake neglected chores and spent nights locked in my room drawing pictures and diagrams or learning Rubik’s cube algorithms while his mother yelled at him through the door to go to sleep. His mother has always been compulsive about the things he set his mind to. The satisfaction of solving problems and executing my visions is all-consuming. But his obsessive personality has helped him solve other problems, too. He has constantly fixed the automatic garage door for his parents. However, that was not the story of concern because for the first time he was going to be the talk of the whole school as the “master of date.”
As the projects he tackled got bigger, he had to be more resourceful. In high school, Jake’s obsessive nature found a new outlet in programming. Jake wrote a program in Android; iOS that can to enable one make shallow, snap judgments about potential partners. But it the most important part of the app was that it displays singles in your area or school in order of the most person you are crushing on. He ultimately planned to turn this into a smartphone app which was released to the most of his schoolmates and was going to be tested during the valentine party.
The certainty that programming is in many ways same to the talents and hobbies Jake enjoyed as a child--they all require finding creative ways to solve problems. While his motivation to solve these problems might have been a childlike sense of satisfaction in creating new things, he developed a new and profound sense of purpose and desire to put my problem-solving skills to better our world. Despite his objective being to help his shy friends find dates, his invention became the talk of the school afterwards because of the success.
